Israel Apprehends Several Individuals in Southern Syria Raids
(MENAFN) On Sunday, the Israeli military announced it had apprehended multiple individuals during a series of operations conducted in southern Syria, subsequently transferring them into Israeli custody for interrogation.
According to a military communiqué, the 210th Division carried out multiple raids over the past week targeting what were described as “weapons warehouses” across southern Syrian territory.
The army confirmed that several detainees were taken into Israel for “detailed questioning.”
Despite the absence of direct threats from Syria’s new government, Israeli forces have ramped up their activities within Syrian borders following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024.
These intensified efforts have included lethal airstrikes that have resulted in civilian casualties and the destruction of Syrian military assets, such as positions, vehicles, and ammunition stockpiles. Israeli troops have also conducted ground incursions in the Quneitra and Rif Dimashq regions.
Since the 1967 conflict, Israel has maintained control over most of Syria’s Golan Heights. In the wake of Assad’s downfall, Tel Aviv has further extended its authority into Syria’s buffer zone, declaring the 1974 Disengagement Agreement with Damascus null and void.
Assad, who governed Syria for nearly a quarter-century, fled to Russia in December, ending the Baath Party’s long-standing rule since 1963.
In January, Syria established a new transitional government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa.
