US initiates discussions with Israel, Syria to make security deal
According to two senior Israeli sources, although reaching an agreement is still within the realm of possibility, the process is expected to be drawn out. One of the officials noted that an agreement is “not around the corner.”
At present, the conversations involve only mid-level representatives, and there have been no talks about convening a summit involving national leaders, according to a U.S. official. “The US favors a gradual process that would slowly build trust and improve relations between Israel and Syria,” the report said.
In contrast, Israeli leadership is reportedly pushing for firm commitments that any discussions must ultimately result in a formal peace treaty and full normalization of relations. “Any talks will ultimately lead to a full peace agreement and normalization,” said a senior Israeli official.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly interested in a step-by-step approach, beginning with an updated version of the 1974 disengagement agreement. This accord originally established a demilitarized buffer zone and included provisions for the separation of forces and the exchange of prisoners of war, as noted by a senior Israeli source.
Israeli authorities view the areas it currently occupies—both the buffer zone and Syrian territory—as significant bargaining tools. They have indicated that any withdrawal would be contingent on achieving a comprehensive peace agreement.
