Israeli Bulldozers Tear Into Syrian Farmland to Extend Barrier
Crews are building an earth berm across privately owned agricultural land west of al-Hanout Farm in southern Quneitra province, the agency said. The work is part of the “Sufa 53” fortification project. Residents fear the construction will cut off and damage broad stretches of farmland lying west of the berm.
The latest operation follows an earlier one on Oct. 18, when Israeli forces leveled about 13 dunams (1.3 hectares) of olive groves in al-Hanout, near the village of Saida, the agency reported. Troops also blocked farmers from reaching their remaining fields during the olive harvest.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry has demanded an end to the project, calling it a violation of the disengagement agreement and of international resolutions.
Sufa 53 consists of a military road, trenches and earth berms. Israel began building it in mid-2022 near Hadr in northern Quneitra, then extended it south through the province along the separation line with the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
In a separate incident on Sunday, Israeli troops moved into northern Quneitra and set up a temporary checkpoint on the road linking Jubata al-Khashab and Ain al-Bayda, the state news agency said. A group of several military vehicles stopped and searched passersby before pulling out. A similar incursion took place near Jubata al-Khashab on Saturday, according to the agency.
Israel has staged repeated incursions into southern Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024. It has declared the 1974 disengagement agreement void and occupied the demilitarized buffer zone.
